UK: nursing and midwifery practice areas of most concern

Fitness to practise (FtP) data from the NMC shines a light on the areas of practice that are of most concern to the public and employers.

The first ever Insight into Fitness to Practice report shows that the public are more likely to raise concerns over communication and manner among nursing and midwifery professionals. On the other hand, employers are more likely to focus on performance-related issues and competence.

Both patients and employers most commonly raise concerns around patient care, relating to diagnosis, observation or assessment. Patients and employers also share concern over record keeping and dishonesty, including care plans, drug and medication records, and misrepresentations or omissions related to patient care or employment.

‘[This data] chimes with recent findings from the Care Quality Commission that there’s been a decline in positive feedback from new mothers about communication during childbirth,’ said NMC interim executive director of strategy and insight, Kuljit Dhillon. ‘If we’re going to uphold public confidence in the professions, then all parts of the patient safety system, including the NMC, must do better to support all professionals to communicate effectively with the people in their care.’

In an update released today (30 January) the NMC has said it has increased the diversity of its pool of panel members, who make decisions at fitness to practise hearings
