Spain: diet impact on cognitive health

Consuming a Mediterranean diet could be beneficial to cognitive health in older adults, researchers report.

The 12-year-study from the University of Barcelona set out to find a link between a Mediterranean diet and cognitive health. Researchers collected data from 840 people over the age of 65 in Bourdeaux and Dijon, France. Participants were free of dementia as a baseline, and 65% of them were women.

The researchers measured food intake using their own Mediterranean Diet Metabolomic Score (MDMS), building upon the Mediterranean Diet Score (MDS). The MDMS was based on serum biomarkers of key food groups. The study found that a greater adherence to a Mediterranean diet was associated with lower odds of cognitive decline in adults.

The authors said the results provide new evidence for a better understanding of the biological mechanisms involved.
