Northern Ireland: health and social care workforce grows by over a fifth

Between 2015 and (March) 2024, the Health and Social Care (HSC) workforce grew by 22%, revealed the HSC workforce census by the Department of Health.

Nursing, midwifery and health visiting was the largest occupational group, accounting for 34%, of the workforce. More than three-quarters of all HSC staff were female.

The largest workforce was at The Belfast HSC Trust who employ 29%, of all HSC staff.

The census presents an analysis of staff by occupation, organisation, gender, working pattern and age.

It covers the majority of HSC hospital, community and social services workforce, totalling 74,039 staff in post or 65,984 whole-time equivalent.

More then two-thirds of HSC staff were employed at Agenda for Change Bands one to four, the census revealed.
