England: greater focus needed on children and young people’s services

The CQC’s annual State of Care report has outlined major challenges for children’s health and wellbeing, highlight the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH).

The CQC have called for more to be done for children and young people’s services on both the national and local level. Some of the major challenges addressed by the CQC include:

  • Funding for early intervention
  • Improved communication with children and their families
  • Better understanding of the gaps in provision of care.

Further findings have put the spotlight on long waiting lists, high demand for mental health services and the struggle for some parents to get adequate dental care for their children.

‘The CQC’s latest report paints an alarming picture of child health services,’ said RCPCH President Professor Steve Turner. ‘The government’s ambition to shift from hospital to the community and from treatment to prevention cannot be achieved without addressing today’s gaps in the child health workforce, such as the dramatic decrease in the number of health visitors the CQC have highlighted.’
