Publication: Young people and vaping, Public Health Wales (PHW)

What are the main points?
> Nearly one in six year 11 students regularly use vapes. More than 45% say they have tried a vape.
> Most vapes contain nicotine, an addictive substance. Nicotine addiction can affect concentration and learning, while withdrawal can disrupt sleep, cause headaches and affect mental health.
> Parents should bear in mind that signs of vaping can also be normal signs of adolescent growth, such as mood swings.
> The guide for parents and carers includes tips for how to spot potential signs of vaping, and how to approach an open conversation with their child.
EXPERT THOUGHT
Mary-Ann McKibben, PHW consultant in public health said: ‘Vaping is on the increase amongst young people in Wales, as it is across the UK. The key thing is to have open conversations with your loved ones. Stay calm, don’t panic – and crucially try to stay positive.’
