Public consultation on free period products in Northern Ireland

The public consultation on making period products free to all was launched earlier this week by the Executive Office (TEO) and running for 12 weeks until 18 September.

They are asking for your views on how best to implement The Act, in order to make sure all period products are available for free by their goal of May 2024.

Legislation known as the Period Products (Free Provision) Act (Northern Ireland) 2022 – or ‘The Act’ – aims to ensure period products are available universally and free of charge. The Act places importance on dignity and removing financial barriers to accessing period products.

TEO want to know your thoughts on:

  1. How people ought to be able to obtain period products free of charge
  2. Where period products ought to be obtainable free of charge
  3. What types of period products ought to be obtainable free of charge

Siobhan Broderick, Director of Equality, Rights & Identity at The Executive Office said:

‘We believe this is a matter of basic dignity. No one should be prevented from going to school, college or work because they cannot access period products when they need them. To shape what this scheme will look like, the Department is now consulting with the public on what type of products should be available, and how and where they should be obtained.’

The deadline for responses is Monday 18 September 2023 at 11:59pm. For more information and to have your say, contact TEO here.
