The NMC has published the second phase of its Ambitious for Change research into the regulator’s processes and people’s diversity characteristics, with some concerning results.
The report revealed that when comparing the NMC’s fitness to practise (FtP) referral rates with workforce diversity data, some employers are disproportionately referring more men and black professionals. Also, most of those questioned said they felt one or more of their diversity characteristics played a part in their referral.
The research also showed that work settings and the type of work can influence a person’s experience of revalidation or FtP. Settings employing a lot of bank and agency staff are particularly affected.
NMC chief executive and registrar Andrea Sutcliffe said: ‘The findings highlight opportunities for us to ensure our processes are fair.’
