Diet patterns among children reveal urgent need for action

Scotland Publication: Dietary Intake in Scotland’s Children (DISH), Food Standards Scotland

What are the main points?

  • A survey of 1700 participants aged two to 15 showed worrying dietary habits, especially among the most deprived areas, as well as among young people aged 11 to 15.
  • Children in the most deprived areas were eating less fruit and vegetables and were less likely to meet fibre goals than those in the least deprived areas.
  • Food insecurity affects nearly one in five families, with higher rates in the most deprived areas.
  • Overall, free sugars intake was too high (sugars added to food and drinks, or contained within honey, syrup and fruit juice). Children aged 11 to 15 consumed far more free sugars and had diets lower in fibre than younger children.
