Wales: Obesity: community and primary care have important role

10 January 2022

Two reports by Public Health Wales have highlighted how primary and community care can support obesity prevention and weight management.

The two publications, which both offered a set of recommendations, also reveal the support healthcare workers need in order to help.

The first report looked at the primary care needs of people aged 18 to 64 living with overweight or obesity in Wales, and included person-centred approaches.

The second highlighted potential conflicts in primary and community care professionals’ understanding of the causes – 93.6% viewed obesity as a chronic condition, while 48% agreed, to some extent, that obesity is due to personal choice.

Some professionals felt confident in their ability to support weight and weight management, but still encountered barriers: signposting and service availability, time constraints, societal stigma, and education and training.
