Hearing dogs significantly improve people's lives, first-ever trial shows

10 January 2022

Research published in Trials shows that assistance dogs for those living with hearing loss have positive and far-reaching impacts.

People with a hearing dog had significantly better mental wellbeing, were less dependent on others, and had fewer symptoms of anxiety and depression compared with those still waiting for a hearing dog.

They were also significantly less likely to feel isolated and fearful, and used fewer NHS and social care services.

The study is the first randomised controlled trial investigating the impact of hearing dogs. Angie Platten, director of services at charity Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, said they ‘see, every day, the difference hearing dogs make to deaf children and adults’.
