Wales: winter plan aims to keep essential services running

22 November 2021

The Winter Plan will help ensure emergency care is able to cope and minimise disruption to planned care, the Welsh Government has said.

NHS Wales chief executive Andrew Goodall said that ‘this winter will be one of the hardest periods we have ever faced’, due to the challenge of both Covid-19 and other respiratory viruses.

He also said services needed to remain ready to respond to rapidly changing circumstances.

An extra £42m funding for social care was announced on top of the £248m already announced for the NHS Covid recovery fund.

In addition to Covid-19 vaccinations, key priorities in the Winter Plan include maintaining the resilience of health and social care services; responding to the mental health impact of the pandemic; and ensuring vulnerable groups have access to treatment.
