US: Fathers’ depression continues after baby’s intensive care stay

22 July 2021

Both mothers and fathers with a baby in the neonatal intensive care unit are at risk of depression, a study of more than 400 people in Pediatrics found.

Depression symptoms were identified in 33% of mothers and 17% of fathers. However. the probability of reporting symptoms declined significantly for mothers but not for fathers after the baby came home.

Author Craig Garfield said the finding ‘underscores the importance of reaching out to fathers, who might not even be aware that they need help’.
