Covid-19 life assurance scheme announced

The families of health and care workers on the frontline will benefit from a new life assurance scheme during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Families of eligible workers who die from coronavirus in the course of their essential work in England and Wales will receive a £60,000 payment, health and social care secretary Matt Hancock said.

It will cover staff who provide hands-on personal care for people who have contracted the virus or work in health or care settings where the virus is present.

A similar scheme was announced in Scotland by health secretary Jeane Freeman, while minister for health Robin Swann was considering the Northern Ireland response at time of writing.

‘We owe a huge debt to those who die in service to our nation and are doing everything we can to protect them,’ said Hancock.
