England: mental health support for NHS staff overhauled

11 April 2019

The government is planning to provide better mental health and wellbeing support to NHS staff.

Among options being considered are post-incident support for NHS frontline staff, such as peer group support or psychological assessments, a 24-hour dedicated mental health advice and support service, and fast-tracked mental health referrals for NHS employees.

Other ideas recommended by Health Education England (HEE) are improved rest spaces for on-call staff and an ‘NHS workforce wellbeing guardian’ in every NHS organisation.

Professor Ian Cumming, HEE chief executive, said: ‘It must be recognised that in giving care, you also absorb some of the concerns and issues of the people that you are caring for. We must do better for those in the caring professions.’
