Global: gaming addiction recognised as a disorder by WHO

06 February 2018

Addiction to playing computer games will be listed as a mental health condition for the first time by the WHO.

WHO’s 11th International classification of diseases will include the condition ‘gaming disorder’ when it is published later this year.

The draft document describes the condition as a pattern of persistent or recurrent gaming behaviour so severe that it takes ‘precedence over other life interests’.

Symptoms include impaired control over gaming, increased priority given to gaming, and escalating or continuing gaming despite negative consequences.

Dr Richard Graham, lead technology addiction specialist at the Nightingale Hospital in London, said he saw about 50 new cases of digital addiction each year.
